The Hindu Lit for Life has always been inclusive, focussing on regional literature as well as international literature. Earlier editions have seen sessions by big names from Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Urdu, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages. Translation workshops conducted at the Festival have always been very popular.
As The Hindu Tamil celebrates its fifth anniversary, the Festival has decided to introduce The Hindu Lit For Life Tamil — a day-long event showcasing Tamil literature.
The last 100 years have witnessed remarkable achievements, thanks to the contributions of some great writers. Different periods, streams of thought and ideologies, political movements, films, and print media have had a huge impact on literary trends in the last century.
On January 7 2018, the first edition of the Festival will celebrate 100 years of the Tamil short story. The Hindu Lit for Life Tamil will examine the theme from all angles. Sessions will focus on history and development, women’s writings, the multiple facets of short stories, reflect on Dravidian movements, Dalit politics, progressive movements, and writings from the minorities. There will be interactions, readings and screenings from popular films and short films that reflect this literary wealth.
The Hindu Lit for Life Tamil has instituted awards — a Lifetime Achievement Award and five awards for Emerging Writers — that will be presented on January 7, 2018.
